Nike Celebrates Visionary Women

Nike is celebrating a group of visionary women in its Air VaporMax campaign, who are reshaping sports and fusing it with culture.

Inspired by Nike’s latest innovation, the Air VaporMax running shoe, which places your foot directly on Nike Air technology, the ‘Visionairs’ are inspiring a community to peel away the layers of challenges, including personal ones, that limit women in sports. The Visionairs include:

Shana Power

A fighter. Her entire life has been a fight against prescribed roles, in and out of the cage. From a life threatening lung condition to her recent (and only) loss, Shana never backs down and never gives up. She is now on the path to reclaim her title as one of the best cage fighters in the world. Shana is not going to stop until she regains this title and running will take her there. For Shana, the fight starts before she steps into the cage; it starts on the streets where she runs in the dark of the early morning. Running unifies her mind, body and heart.

The Pack

An all-female running crew, with their home on the streets of Johannesburg. They run through excuses and over obstacles, transcending any limits. They are the embodiment of a new generation of irreverent young women that are breaking through all the limitations imposed on them by their own fears and societal stereotypes. They are not running against each other. They are running with each other. What started as one woman’s vision for herself, has become a movement owned by a group of women chasing the same thing; together they motivate each other to run further and faster.

DJ Doowap

A familiar face on radio and television, and in the fashion world. The story of this trend setting style icon is well documented in South African pop culture. But what many don’t know is that she has the DNA of an athlete. She is a professional springboard diver and an avid runner. Running is the thing that gives her an edge to face her fears; it gives her the strength and confidence to ignore the voice in her head telling her she can’t. Running is her constant reminder to move forward, to innovate.

Lady Skollie

A visual artist whose work boldly investigates concepts of gender, intimacy and human connection. Defying traditional taboos, she uses her art to address important topics that are otherwise not openly spoken about in South African culture. Lady Skollie runs against the grain of society.  Her candid expressions inspires sharp introspection, both as women and as a society.  You can either run from the truth or towards it.
