Maverick Publishing Corporation, publishers of leading, home-grown female health and fitness title, fitness, has appointed Mariska du Plessis as the magazine’s new editor. She takes over the editorial reigns from long-standing editor and co-publisher, Tanja Schmitz, as work commence’s on the title’s best-selling January-February issue.
“Mariska is a prominent figure in the local health and fitness community, having built her popular MariskaFit online and social media profile over the years,” explains Schmitz. “She is also a competitive Bikini athlete and has worked for the industry’s leading local supplement brand, USN. Her experience and notoriety and her established network in the industry makes her the ideal choice for the role of fitness magazine editor, particularly given our shift toward digital content creation.”
Du Plessis first gained publishing and writing experience while working at a custom publisher, before moving to a digital media agency, where she developed her social media acumen and honed her strategic content creation and curation capabilities.
“I was then given an opportunity to join the dynamic marketing team at USN, to help drive their social media marketing and engagement strategies. My understanding of digital media and my ability to relate to the core market, having successfully completed the USN Body Makeover Challenge and competing as a Bikini athlete, proved to be a unique combination of attributes that met the company’s specific needs at the time,” explains du Plessis.
Then, in early 2017, du Plessis decided to blaze her own trail as a social media marketing consultant, before accepting the position of fitness editor, having collaborated with the editorial team on numerous online and editorial projects throughout the year.
“The magazine is undoubtedly South Africa’s most successful dedicated female fitness magazine and I’ve been an avid reader ever since my interest in gym training was sparked. I’m therefore honoured to be working with the incredible team at Maverick Publishing. They have built such an iconic brand and continue to grow the magazine’s undeniable position as the country’s leading source of local, relevant content and information,” she adds.
She has committed to building on the established editorial pillars of health, exercise and fitness and wellness, delivering well-researched and practical content of the highest quality that readers can implement to reach their goals. “My ultimate passion and aim is to promote the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle to a broader audience, using the content the team and I create to educate, inform and empower our community.”
“With her wealth of knowledge and experience in the health and fitness industry, Mariska will add valuable insight and direction to our editorial content,” continues Schmitz. “Her passion and commitment to health and fitness also brings renewed vibrancy to the team, to add a new dimension and perspective to key industry trends and topics, which I’m confident will resonate with our readers,” she concludes.
