What Causes Female Hair Loss

The average person loses between 50 and 100 hairs per day. This is usually not noticeable, as new hair is growing simultaneously. Although men are more likely to lose their hair than women, thinning hair and hair fall is more common amongst women.

There is no simple answer to female hair loss, as it can be caused by numerous factors. To treat it and restore hair growth, it is vital that the underlying cause is accurately identified. Some of the most common causes of hair loss in women include:

Genetics

Millions of women are affected by androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss. This is a hereditary condition. A normal hair growth cycle includes the shedding of hair, resting of that follicle and thereafter stimulation of new hair growth. Female experiencing androgenetic alopecia are however susceptible to the new hair growing back thinner and finer. Over time, the hair follicle may become so degenerated that hair growth may stop completely. Genetics is only one aspect to consider, but it is worth noting if your mother or grandmother has experienced significant hair loss, chances are you may too.

Medical conditions and hormonal changes

There are a wide range of medical conditions that can cause sudden hair loss. These include thyroid disorders, autoimmune diseases and polycystic ovary syndrome. Hormonal changes because of pregnancy and menopause can also induce hair fall.

Physical stress and over-styling

High tension hairstyles such as cornrows and braids can cause a type of hair loss known as traction alopecia. When the hair is pulled too tightly at the roots, the hair follicles are under strain and can result in hair loss. Over styling and treatments such as chemical relaxers and hot oil, treatments may also damage the root of the hair and result in hair loss.

Emotional stress

Emotional stress stemming from traumatic experiences including death or divorce may not seem like a likely cause of hair loss, but many women have reported thinning and hair loss during trying times.

Dramatic weight loss

The body perceives sudden weight loss as a form of physical trauma, even if the weight loss is positive or necessary. This shock to the body is known to cause hair loss. Hair fall is common among anorexia and bulimia sufferers.

Nutrient deficiency

Certain nutrient deficiencies heavily impact hair growth. Iron is essential for healthy growth. Anaemic individuals are prone to hair loss, particularly among young women. Vitamin B12 deficiency carries similar effects. This vital nutrient is responsible for the health of red blood cells which transports oxygen to the body’s tissues. Vitamin B12 deficiency also results in fatigue and possible hair loss.

How to minimise hair loss and maximise hair growth

Because of the various contributing factors, it’s important to discuss hair loss with your medical practitioner. They will exclude possible underlying medical conditions and assist in identifying the cause. Despite the cause of your hair loss, a healthy lifestyle goes a long way in promoting healthy hair growth. A balanced diet filled with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, healthy protein and minimal sugar is a great place to start.
